The Unexpected Gifts of Family
For the past nine years, I’ve called a new country home. Taiwan, with its warmth and charm, has been my sanctuary. Winters here aren’t cloaked in snow; sometimes, you’ll even catch me wearing short sleeves during Christmas. Yet, as much as I adore this place, the holiday season often brings a sense of longing—a tug at the heart for the traditions and atmosphere of home in the United States.
But this year was different. My family flew halfway across the world to spend Christmas together here in Taiwan. In that moment, I realized something profound: no matter where I am, the presence of family makes anywhere feel like home. The simple joy of having loved ones nearby transformed an ordinary holiday into an extraordinary one. It reminded me of an essential truth: family is the most precious gift of all.

The Meaning of Warmth
What defines “home” for each of us? Is it the house we grew up in, a city we’ve come to love, or the people we surround ourselves with? For me, warmth lies in the people who care for us—those who create an environment where we can feel safe, understood, and valued. It’s about love and connection. And it’s this sense of warmth that shapes the way we experience life, no matter the physical location.
In Taiwan, the lack of a “traditional” Christmas atmosphere I grew up with—snow-covered rooftops, holiday carols on repeat, and crackling fireplaces—initially left a void. But it was quickly filled by the warmth of family. I realized that while nostalgia tugs at us, it’s the relationships we nurture that create lasting happiness.
Cherish the Now: Lessons from Family Gatherings
This holiday season taught me a vital lesson: cherish the present. When surrounded by loved ones, time feels fleeting. Days blend into laughter, stories, and quiet moments of shared understanding. These are the memories that anchor us in life.
One story sticks out from our family reunion. We didn’t do anything grand—no big parties or elaborate outings—but rather spent our days simply talking and enjoying each other’s company. We played board games, prepared meals together, and walked through local markets. These moments of togetherness, stripped of distractions, made me appreciate the value of connection.

Home is not a place—it’s the people who make your heart feel full.
Building Connections: The Everyday Acts That Matter
You don’t need grand gestures to create lasting bonds with your family. Simple, thoughtful actions—like calling your parents, writing a heartfelt note, or planning a shared meal—can strengthen your relationships in meaningful ways. Here are some practical ideas to stay connected:
- Plan a Virtual Family Night: If your family is far away, schedule a video call to share dinner or play a game together.
- Create a Shared Photo Album: Let everyone contribute pictures from their daily lives—it’s a wonderful way to stay updated and feel closer.
- Set Up a Tradition: Whether it’s an annual trip or a weekly call, having rituals builds consistency and strengthens bonds.
Balancing Nostalgia and Growth
As much as I cherish the memories of Christmases past, I’ve learned not to let nostalgia overshadow the beauty of the present. While it’s natural to miss old traditions, each year offers an opportunity to create new ones. By blending past and present, we honor our roots while embracing growth.
This year, my family and I started a new tradition: cooking a fusion of Taiwanese and American dishes for Christmas dinner. It was a small way to celebrate our cultural roots while appreciating the life we’ve built here. These small acts of blending past and present help create a deeper sense of belonging.
Practical Tips for Cultivating Warmth
- Stay Grateful: A gratitude journal can help you focus on the little blessings that make life meaningful.
- Show Appreciation: Simple words of acknowledgment—like “thank you” or “I appreciate you”—go a long way in nurturing relationships.
- Be Present: When spending time with loved ones, set aside distractions like phones and fully engage in the moment.
- Create Memories: Capture photos, write letters, or keep a shared journal to document family experiences.

A Heartfelt Wish for the Holidays
As the year comes to a close, I encourage everyone to pause and reflect on the relationships that matter most. In the hustle of daily life, it’s easy to overlook the quiet power of family and connection. Whether it’s through a phone call, a warm hug, or simply sitting together in silence, take a moment to cherish your loved ones.
The Journey Home
This holiday, I was reminded of a simple truth: the presence of family makes any place feel like home. While life’s circumstances may pull us in different directions, it’s the bonds we nurture that keep us grounded. As I step into the new year, I carry this lesson close to my heart, knowing that love and connection are the most enduring gifts.
At the end of this post, I want to share a song that perfectly encapsulates the feelings of love, warmth, and belonging—“Home” by Phillip Phillips. I hope its melody and lyrics inspire you to cherish the special connections and moments in your life. 🎶✨
Wishing you a magical holiday season filled with joy, love, and cherished memories with your loved ones! ❄️🎄☃️
"Home"
Hold on to me as we go
As we roll down this unfamiliar road
And although this wave, wave is stringing us along
Just know you're not alone
'Cause I'm gonna make this place your home
Settle down, it'll all be clear
Don't pay no mind to the demons
They fill you with fear
The trouble - it might drag you down
If you get lost, you can always be found
Just know you're not alone
'Cause I'm gonna make this place your home
Settle down, it'll all be clear
Don't pay no mind to the demons
They fill you with fear
The trouble - it might drag you down
If you get lost, you can always be found
Just know you're not alone
'Cause I'm gonna make this place your home
(Come on)
